On October 17, 2005, the Achievement Center opened its doors for business. In the first year, we spent much of our time explaining who we are and how we can help students. Now, most students and staff already know what we have to offer and an increasing number are taking advantage of our services.
The freshmen have been introduced to the Center: most of them toured the Center on their first day of school. Like last year, one of our highest priorities has been to make sure all the freshmen math classes come to the Center for training and orientation to Plato ®.
The Achievement Center was really helpful place for me to go when I was looking for one-on-one help with an assignment. I received personal attention which allowed me to grow and learn academically. The staff is motivated and really looking to help students with what ever they need.
~ Anna Tranfaglia, CEHS '08, University of Pittsburgh class of 2012
As a result of summer professional development work, Algebra teachers have aligned Plato ® math modules with their curriculum and are using the Plato ® to support their classroom curriculum.
Writing-related services are off to a very busy start! We have already had several Inspiration classes. Students in all grade levels have been coming in to the Center to work on writing assignments for social studies and English and are scheduling writing conferences with Lisa Melanson and Hannah Jones.
We expect to have another active year for peer tutoring. Interest in volunteering as a peer tutor is very high; response to our first call for volunteer tutors has been terrific. In terms of overall weekly attendance, by week three we had already surpassed our 2nd semester average. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting year!
